Agile Testing Method Simplified

Today’s trend in Software Development is racing towards achieving Targets, Quality and Customer Satisfaction within a limited time frame. This is mostly because the Business Scenario in today’s world is different from what it used to be, a few years ago. Most of the Product Development companies are now adopting a new age concept called “Agile Methodology” for the Software Development Life Cycle.
Software Testing has been a prime focus ever since the IT Industry has realized the importance of Quality of Deliverables, no matter what methodology we follow with the Software Development. However, since the Software Testing is a part of the Business Model, the Testing process also needs to change accordingly. Needless to say, we have so called “Agile Testing” as a result of such a Business Model.

Introduction to Agile Testing
While the given application under test is still evolving depending upon the customer needs, the mindset of the end user and the current market condition, it is highly impractical to go for the usual standard SDLC Models like Water Fall, V&V Model etc. Such models are most suitable for the Applications that are stable and non-volatile. The concept of “Time-To-Market” is the key word in today’s IT Business that compels the Software vendors to come up with new strategies to save the time, resources, cut down the cost involved and at the same time, deliver a reliable product that meets the user requirements. In this case, a reasonably good amount of end-to-end testing is carried out and the product could be acceptable with known issues/defects at the end of an intermediate release. These defects are harmless for the Application usability.
To adopt such a process in a systematic way, we have a new concept called Agile Methodology. This methodology continuously strives to overcome the issues of dynamically changing requirements while still trying to maintain a well-defined process.

The process is as follows:
1. The Customer prepares the Business Requirements and the Business Analyst or the Engineering team reviews it. Ideally, the Quality Assurance/Testing team is also involved in reviewing these requirements in order to be able to plan further stages accordingly.

2. During the Design and Implementation stages, the Engineering team writes User Stories and the analysis of issues at various stages. The Customer reviews these on regular basis and updates the Requirement specifications accordingly. The Testing team would follow up on regular basis at every stage until a consolidated documentation is prepared. This is to ensure that the Customer, the Engineering team and the Testing team are at the same page always and thus ensuring complete test coverage.

3. While the Engineering team starts the implementation, the Testing team starts with test planning, test strategies and test cases preparation. These would be properly documented and handed over to the Customer and the Engineering team for review. This is to ensure the complete test coverage and avoid unnecessary or redundant test cases.

4. As and when the Developer implements the code, the Testing team identifies if the application can be built using this code for a quick testing. This is to identify the defects at the early stage so that the developer can fix them in the next round on priority basis and continue with further development. This iteration continues until the end of the code implementation. Once the testing cycle starts, the Test team can now focus more on major test items such as Integration, Usability Testing and System Testing etc.

Scope of testing an application
The Testing team knows the complexity involved and it is accepted by the customer that the software development and/or the enhancements and hence the testing is a continuous process. Testing of the application at a black box level would suffice in order to identify the issues and raise the defects by the Testing team. The application continues to evolve until it reaches the stage of final acceptance. Hence the scope of testing would continue to evolve as per the Customer needs.

Process followed at various stages in the product life cycle
Every intermediate release of the product would be divided into two short cycles, usually of the duration of 40 days each. Each cycle would be executed in the following stages. The roles and responsibilities of every individual and the team are clearly defined for each stage.

- Design Specifications: The Testing team’s efforts would focus on performing any tool or process improvements and reviewing, understanding, and contributing to the nascent specifications.
- Implementation: While the Engineering/Development team is implementing the code, Testers would develop complete Testing Plan and Test Sets (set of test cases) for each of the features included in the cycle. Engineering features must be included; they would likely require some level of collaboration with the engineering feature developer. All Test Sets should be ready to execute by the end of implementation period of the respective cycle. After Test Set preparation, calculate the time estimation and prioritization for the Test Set execution based on the complexity and expected execution time for each test suite.
- While the test execution time estimation is notoriously difficult, this number should provide the Customer with a starting point for benchmarking.
- Testing/QA: Test Set execution, raising defects and follow up with the Engineering Team. End-to-end validation of the defects. Focus simultaneously on improving the quality of test cases. Watching out for and adding new cases as testing proceeds. Testing the software end-to-end to discover regressions and subtle systemic issues. Learning to focus more on using the time available to uncover the largest number of and most important bugs. Any deviation from the estimated time should be communicated across well in advance, so that the schedule can be worked upon depending upon the priority of the pending tasks. If there are certain issues or test cases blocking due to unknown errors, they would be differed until the beginning of next Testing/QA Cycle.
- Before acceptance: Follow up on ad-hoc requests/ changes in requirements on a regular basis, besides trying to complete the defined tasks.

Looking at various broad areas of testing of a complex application, the system structure, and the depth of functionality implemented and the level of complexity, the complete end-to-end Test Execution within a limited time frame would be next to impossible with any standard SDLC Model available. The Product/application involves a good deal of learning of how and when to use the application and requires that the end user know the functionality of various modules prior to constructing a User defined model (UDM) for his Business purpose or even for testing.

Reasons for Agile Testing methodology to test an Application

The testing wouldn’t be 100% complete in this case before the finished product reaches the hands of the end user. This is true especially when the target audience and its system structure are unknown. Different users have their own set of ideas and unique problems. Given this fact, it is hard to say that it is 100% bug free software when it reaches the customer. Hence, taking into account the constraints involved in using the standard SDLC Models, it is worth adopting an approach such as Agile Testing, which is more suitable for the dynamically changing requirements.

Context Driven Testing and Rapid Testing:
This type of testing is what usually the Agile Testers incorporate. Context Driven testing is the one where the test scenarios are not known before hand. It mostly comes from the context in which the application is being executed. In our case, it is constructing the UDMs based on a given use case from the targeted end user and test it for the scenarios that are explained by his system configuration. It also includes constructing the UDMs based on any trouble-shooting discussion arising out of defects pointed out during the Customer acceptance and testing.

Rapid Testing is a process of defining our own strategies to test the Software, not necessarily following any specific Process or a Model. It focuses mainly on identifying the defects as quickly as possible rather than focusing on the end user requirements.

Heuristic approach is used in such cases. The tester uses his common sense and previous work experience to test the application at various levels in order to figure out where the application stands.

What is agile testing?
Agile testing is used whenever customer requirements are changing dynamically

If we have no SRS, BRS but we have test cases does you execute the test cases blindly or do you follow any other process.

Test case would have detail steps of what the application is supposed to do.
1) Functionality of application.
2) In addition you can refer to Backend, is mean look into the Database. To gain more knowledge of the application.

What is an agile testing life cycle?

0digg
Almost all the other software development life cycles either follow a sequential model (eg waterfall model) or an iterative model .But for processes which are a little more complex these models find it difficult to tackle the changes which are large in number and continuous.
Agile model was basically made in order to counter these changes effectively and smoothly. This method is a collection of values, principles and practices that tests and provide the feedback to convert it into a new style of development

AGILE TESTING LIFE CYCLE
Steps of Agile development life cycle
·                     Iteration -1 :Identify, prioritize the potential project, and consider its feasibility
·                     Iteration 0 (Warm Up) : Initiates the project, takes care of the initial inputs , and emphasis is on building a unit
·                     Construction Iterations: Client participates actively and advises about the expected output, requirements and stuff which is not required by the project
·                     Release: Deploys first release into production , Final system testing and trains end users
·                     Production: Operates, supports and identifies defects in the system
·                     Retirement: Removes the system completely from production and migrates the users
Key differences between Agile and other conventional Methodologies:
·                     The product that is developed is based upon incremental, rapid cycles rather than sequential methodology which is deployed by conventional models(INCREMNTAL means each release is tested about its functionality and its increments are small and calculative )
·                     Where other methods emphasize on processes and tools, this method stresses on people and interactions. Customer’s point of view is also given a priority as well as developer and tester also has their say in the upbringing of the product
·                     The product should be working as thought and expected ,but its documentation isn’t given a priority
·                     Agile method focuses on an end product which is functional and takes into consideration all the conditions but the documentation isn’t a priority on agile method’s list.
·                     This is also because the developer, tester, and the customer or client are always in conversation and they do know how the product is going to shape up
·                     All Agile method include customer as integral part of the team ,customer clarify the developer about the need requirements and limitations of the product

Agile testing

Agile testing is a software testing practice that follows the principles of agile software development. Agile testing does not emphasize testing procedures and focuses on ongoing testing against newly developed code until quality software from an end customer's perspective results. Agile testing is built upon the philosophy that testers need to adapt to rapid deployment cycles and changes in testing patterns.

 [edit]Overview

Agile testing involves testing from the customer perspective as early as possible, testing early and often as code becomes available and stable enough, since working increments of the software are released often in agile software development. This is commonly done by using automated acceptance testing to minimize the amount of manual labor involved.

Mobile Testing Interview Questions and Answers
Q. What is the difference between TDMA and FDMA?
TDMA is Time Division Multiple Access. In TDMA technology each user in the channel owns the channel bandwidth for some time in a round robin fashion. All GSM handsets use this technology.
FDMA is Frequency Division Multiple Access. In FDMA many users are allowed to transmit through the same channel at the same time. So each user at any particular time uses part of the bandwidth. CDMA handsets use this technology.
Q. What will be the common test case for SMS and Mp3 player applications?
There are a few common test cases for SMS and MP player:
TC-I:
1. For SMS: For entering text for SMS, you need to open Text editor.
2. For MP3: For entering/editing play list names, text editor should be opened.
TC-II:
1. For SMS: It uses UDP protocol
2. For MP3: Audio streaming also uses UDP protocol
So, the test cases written for text editor can be used for both applications.
Q. How and from where to download JUnit and what is its use?
Generally, there are 3 levels in structure:
Base level - Platform code will be there.
Service level - modules and their engines communication code.
Application level - GUI, user interacting applications.
JUnit will be used for Unit testing to test at service level.
Q. What are value added Services in Mobile Application Testing?
Value added services refer tpo extra services like toll free number, getting messages for new offers in recharging sim card, getting messages for downloading new ringtones, caller tunes etc.
Q. How to test the MMS application?
MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Services
Pre-requisites before start testing an application MMS.
# ME should have a valid GPRS enabled SIM.
# Profile should be added manually or sometimes operator will send all the settings as message, saving these settings profile will be added. If you are adding profile manually MMS server details of an operator should be provided. These are:
Data(bearer): GPRS
APN:
User:
Password:
Auth:
IP: parameters are is compulsory.
Testing MMS can have several cases, some of them are mentioned below:
Sending, Receiving (text, image, audio, video)
Sending with specific to GPRS classes.
Checking received MMS(Audio,video clarity)
Q. What could be the Possible Test Cases to test the Functionality and Performance of a Mobile Client Application?
There can be a lot of scenarios for mobile client applications. Lets discuss a few of them below
- All mobile features: Incoming call, outgoing call, Incoming SMS, outgoing SMS, phone directory, call history, redial facility, all called numbers, all received numbers, storage capacity of calls, SMSs, audio, video storage, display.
- Multimedia services: Radio, audio, video capabilities, MMS etc.
- Internet: Connectivity, browser display, downloads, uploads etc.
- Utility: Games, reminders, calendars, clock etc.
- Performance: Fill all the hard-disk with say video files. Check how much time it takes to open the files and is there any impact on the way the video is played. Is it slow etc.
These are only few of the many scenarios that can be derived for the mobile client.
Q. How we test battery back up time using load testing especially for mobile testing ?
Below are given a few scenarios to test the mobile battery backup:
1. Charge the mobile up to maximum capacity.
2. Call to a number and continuously use it until the battery fully drained out. Measure the time of life for one full cycle.
3. Charge the battery up to 20% of it's capacity use it until the battery is fully drained out.
4. Charge the battery up to 40% of it's capacity use it until the battery is fully drained out.
5. Similarly check for 60%,80% of battery charge capacities and measure the battery backup time.
6. Verify the battery life by continuously sending SMSs.
7.Verify the (GUI) power indicating lines or levels correctly displaying or not with respect to actually charged battery level.
8.test the phone in non signal coverage area and measure the battery stand by time. (In non signal coverage area cell continuously searches for signals due to this the power continuously dissipated as radio frequency signals and battery drained very soon)
Q. What is the difference between mobile testing, mobile application testing?
Mobile Testing means the complete testing of mobile - system level + Application level
Generally there are 3 catgories:
1. Mobile Protocol stack testing. (using network simulators)
few examples are below:
* Stack supports 4 bands EGSM,PGSM,GSM-850,DCS.Mobile originating and mobile terminating call in all those bands.
*cell selection reselection
*cell bar
*All types of handover
*frequency hopping
*Coding schemes etc
2. Multimedia testing
* Midi polyphonic tones ringer and player
* MP3 as ringer and player &other supported formats
* Camera
* Video Conferencing etc
3. Feature testing
*Phonebook
*SMS
*Supplementary calls
*Security
*Calculator
*Gaming
*Fast dialing etc
Mobile Application testing deals with only the features and multimedia part. But Mobile testing deals with all three categories above.
Q. What is the advantage of symbian OS devices comparing with j2me and Brew OS devices?
- Symbian is the latest OS where as j2me and Brew OSs are old ones.
- Symbian OS has SIS file format where as j2me has JAR file format which means this is a third party software and anybody can develop softwares in this OS.
- Symbian is a fast browsing and a fast operating system. j2me is not as fast.
- Symbian OS provide touchscreen phones such as UIQ phones. No such facility on j2me.
- Symbain OS has superior hardware access to the phone compared to j2me and Brew OS
- Symbian OS offers rich UI.
Q. What are the modes of downloading content on mobile from server?
There are many techniques to download a content e.g. downloading, progressive downloading, streaming etc.
1. Downloading: Normal download and can be saved in the local machine, once saved user can play or do operation whatever he likes.
2. Progressing downloading: Whenever user selects a content it starts buffering and the same will be continued till the file ends playing. The content will be played once the buffer is finished. This could be even a min (e.g. if the buffer is completed for 1 sec the content will be played for one second) 3. Streaming: When user selects a content to download, buffering takes place and once the buffer is over content will be played. Until then player does not get initiated. And user can save, play again or whatever the operation he requires.
Q. What is streaming?
Streaming is the process of downloading a content from the server. There are many techniques to download a content e.g. downloading, progressive downloading, streaming etc.
Downloading: Normal download and can be saved in the local machine, once saved user can play or do operation whatever he likes.

Q. How can smoke testing be applied to mobile testing?
Smoke testing can be done on a Mobile once the latest build has been released to the testing team. Smoke test or build verification is nothing but just the basic functionality check for all the applications, test scope parameters that are involved in mobile application testing, testing very basic and important features of the mobile and also testing the showstopper issues at a higher priority level.
Q. Is there any automation tool for mobile application testing ?
TestQuest is one of the best tools to automate mobile applications
Fitnesse tool can also be used to automate mobile applications.

Wireless testing has a different approach from the usual application testing. It has its standards & guidelines for application testing. The different companies have their own specific test procedure which includes general concepts of testing like functional testing, usability testing etc. Certain things that have to be kept in mind while doing wireless testing are network availability ,compatibility, calls, SMSs interrupt issues. Testing has to follow carrier specific checklist guidelines for testing.

Call modules should be tested for wireless testing, after that all the applications should be tested to check how those applications behave when a call is received in that application.

Testers must be able to think lot of scenarios relating to calls, for example when a call comes and at the same time alarm rings how the system behaves or say when the mobile is busy with a call at that time one more call comes, how the system behaves etc. There can be a lot of scenarios like this.

I just came across this url and could not help myself to comment on this. Your question looks little vague. I mean, are you talking about network level protocols or application level protocols. Or is it related to OBEX protocol implementation in Mobile Apps. Actually the same TCP/IP concepts go in mobile apps also, but when it comes down to browsing apps/downloading apps, it is generally done via WAP gateway (Not WAP Server which generally people confuse with). WAP is a standard defined to serve as a common platform as we cannot directly hook on from normal TCP/IP network to a mobile network. But it is definitely possible to call, SMS, sending mail from any browser to a mobile device, and vice versa. So how does this happen? Also are you talking about what happens at the server end, after the gateway or before that. Also, which carier network are you referring to GSM/CDMA. If I have sensed right it is "OBEX" you are referring to.
